North Ajax Dental offers dental sedation as a convenient and effective option for patients who are anxiour or nervous about their procedures.

Our dental sedation services include:

  • Nitrous oxide sedation : Also known as "laughing gas" , nitrous oxide is used to reduce pain and discomfort. The gas is administered through a face mask which the patient breaths in which puts them in a relaxed and comfortable state. Depending on your needs, we will choose the appropriate sedation option for you.
  • Oral SedationA step down from general anesthesia is oral conscious sedation, which involves the patient taking an oral sedative prior to their procedure, as recommeded by your dentist. Nitrous oxide puts the patient in a conscious, relaxed state. It's also usually given to further enhance the calming effects.
  • Intravenous sedation: It is important to understand that you are not asleep for Intravenous Conscious Sedation. You remain conscious during IV sedation. IV Conscious Sedation involves the administration of drugs (medications) that calm patients creating a drowsy, “sleep-like” state. Simply meaning, Conscious Sedation patients are:
    • Conscious
    • Can breathe on their own
    • Are able to respond to questions
    • With IV Sedation, a patient is in a state of deep relaxation and has a sensation of not being concerned or bothered by what it going on around him. This is accomplished by administering an anti-anxiety medication into the blood during the dental treatment.
  • General Anesthesia sedation: Also called sleep dentistry, general anesthesia can relive pain and anxiety by making a patient unconscious during dental procedures. For patients with intense dental fear or those who need major dental procedures, sleep dentistry presents that is both comfortable and practical.

Before any Sedation Procedure

Prior to undergoing any sedation procedure a thorough assessment is mandatory by your dentist about any allergies or medical conditions you may have. You should also inform the dentist about any medications you are taking and any prior surgeries, including the type of anesthesia, you have had.

You will be advised of the need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the facility for the procedure. It's important to follow all instructions given before your procedure to reduce the risk of slow healing after the procedure. Following your treatment, you will be given a list of instructions to follow as well as symptoms which should alert you to call your dentist.
